Why Would DeVos Cancel a Student Loan Rule That Works?
The following are comments I made today at the Department of Education rule-making meeting on student loan issues. Many for-profit colleges get 80 percent, 90 percent, or more of their revenue from taxpayers. Taxpayers have a right to expect adequate performance and avoidance of waste, fraud, and abuse. Some for-profit schools do a good job.

New DeVos Loan Forgiveness Plan: Another Assault on Students and Gift to Predatory Schools
It took Betsy DeVos nearly a year to take any action on the nearly 100,000 applications by former students who assert that they were deceived and abused by predatory for-profit colleges like Corinthian, ITT, and Kaplan. But the new process announced today appears to be a step backwards, a new attack on students, and a

DeVos Stands With Scoundrels, Not Students – part 2
The U.S. Department of Education under Secretary Betsy DeVos this week began the next step in dismantling the rules issued under President Obama to constrain the predatory abuses of for-profit colleges against students and taxpayers. Last month the Department moved toward taking apart the “borrower defense rule,” which created standards and procedures for students injured by

GOP’s Unholy Alliance: Trump-McConnell-Moore-Kochs
On the heels of the Senate’s massive tax giveaway to the ultra-rich, Mitch McConnell’s tilt this weekend toward bigot and accused predator Roy Moore shows that the Republican Party has become a disgracefully dirty alliance, with corrupt accused predator Donald Trump its poster boy. Trump this morning made his endorsement of Moore in the Alabama

Trump Terrible 10: Tax Scam Edition
“There is no justice, the rich win, the poor are powerless. We become tired of hearing people lie.” — “The Verdict” (1982), screenplay by David Mamet I’m still not surprised by Donald Trump’s disgraceful performance in office. By the time he was elected it was clear how dishonest, corrupt, bigoted, incompetent, and just plain vile

This case may at last provide a public verdict regarding the notorious

Bridgepoint SEC Filing Raises Questions About Continued Federal Funding
A filing Monday with the Securities and Exchange Commission by troubled Bridgepoint Education raises questions about the company’s continued compliance with a federal law requiring for-profit colleges to obtain at least 10 percent of their revenue from sources other than Department of Education-provided student grants and loans. Bridgepoint’s access to other funding was placed in

DeVos Department Stacks Negotiations Deck With For-Profit College Lawyers
When Betsy DeVos announced she would repeal and replace the Obama administration’s rules to protect students and taxpayers against predatory for-profit colleges, one of the signs that she was stacking the deck was the announcement that her Department of Education would select not the traditional two, but instead four, representatives of for-profit colleges to be
