For-profit college group, linked to ALEC, keeps working to harm students and taxpayers

It’s a busy time for APSCU, the trade association of America’s for-profit colleges.  The group spends its time trying to block reasonable measures to hold the worst actors in its industry responsible for their systematic abuses of students and taxpayers, as if the industry is permanently entitled to the enormous amounts of federal taxpayer money — $33 billion in a recent year — that it receives. And the industry is under siege, now that media and government investigations have exposed that many for-profit colleges offer a toxic mix of deceptive recruiting, high prices, low quality instruction, and poor …

Wal-Mart Leaves Corporate Front Group ALEC, Joining 20 Other Organizations

Corporate front group the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has faced increasing scrutiny for secretly passing off corporate-written laws to state legislatures, including the controversial Stand Your Ground gun law. Late last night, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world’s largest retailer and biggest seller of firearms in the country, announced it was suspending its membership in ALEC, which the retailer joined in 1993.

Reuters reports:

“Previously, we expressed our concerns about ALEC’s decision to weigh in on issues that stray from its core mission ‘to advance the Jeffersonian principles of free markets,’” Maggie Sans, Wal-Mart’s vice president of public affairs …

In Latest Press Release, ALEC Claims To Be ‘Transparent, Open’

The staff of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) have been responding to a firestorm over the exodus of major corporations from the organization thanks to increased attention on ALEC’s role in pushing the controversial “Stand Your Ground” law that allowed Trayvon Martin’s killer George Zimmerman to escape prosecution for 40 days (and other particularly despicable legislation). Yesterday, ALEC sent out a press statement complaining that it was being targeted by an “intimidation” campaign that is trying to “eliminate discourse.”

As if that argument wasn’t phony enough, today’s press release from ALEC Executive Director Ron Scheberle, responding to “the support …

Although Bill Gates Supports Gun Control, His Foundation Gave Over $375,000 To ALEC, Front Group Promoting ‘Shoot First’ Law

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) has gotten some much-deserved exposure for its secretive campaigns to push harmful laws in statehouses across the country this week after it was revealed that it helped push Stand Your Ground, the law keeping Trayvon Martin’s killer free in Florida. ALEC, funded by many major corporations we all know, drafts some truly despicable model legislation including laws looking to ban living wages, cripple collective bargaining, attack voting rights, and sell off prisons.

ALEC has its hands all over public policy, including educating kids. As my colleague Zaid Jilani wrote about on Monday, …

Exposed: The Corporations Behind The Law That May Let Trayvon Martin’s Killer Go Free

It’s been widely reported today that the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the shadowy corporate front group that unites state lawmakers with corporations to pass state laws favorable to corporate interests, helped pass the law that might allow Trayvon Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, to escape prosecution. Florida’s “Stand Your Ground,” the law that might help Zimmerman to claim self-defense (despite evidence to the contrary) is just one of many state laws that is nearly identical to ALEC’s model Castle Doctrine Act. The Florida senator who introduced the law, Durell Peadon, was also a member of ALEC. The law passed in …
