5 Reasons Trump Was Our Worst President Ever
A group of 150 academic experts recently rated Donald Trump the worst president in US history.
Why might that be? Here are five reasons:
1. Leadership failures. Trump concealed the dangers of COVID-19 because he was worried about his political popularity. He promoted phony treatments and suggested we inject bleach in our bodies. As a result of his vanity and weak leadership, the United States ended up with the most COVID cases and deaths in the world. Trump also recklessly endangered alliances with friendly nations, while appeasing corrupt dictators like Russia’s Vladimir Putin.
2. Policy failures. Trump’s two main policy achievements were bad for most Americans: First, a tax bill that favored the wealthy and big corporations, instead of working people; and second, actions that severely restricted the freedom of American women to make their own reproductive choices. Meanwhile, Trump kept promising but failed to make serious progress where we needed it: on jobs, immigration, crime, infrastructure, health care, climate change, or other key challenges.
3. Corruption. Trump made Washington more corrupt, cozying up to lobbyists for big corporations, inviting foreign governments to spend big money at his hotels, and issuing pardons to wealthy corporate fraudsters and to crooked associates who might have testified against him.
4. Criminal conduct. Trump has been impeached and indicted for trying to cheat in the last two presidential elections, for encouraging the violent attack on our Capitol and our democracy, and for stealing classified documents. He’s already been convicted of 34 felonies for hiding his misconduct from the public.
5. Bigotry and divisiveness. As candidate and president, Trump regularly insulted women, military service members, Black, Hispanic, Asian, Muslim, and Jewish people, the disabled, and pretty much everyone else not just like him. He bitterly divided our country, when we should be coming together.
While in the White House, Donald Trump did little to address the problems of everyday Americans. Instead, he focused on himself, and on helping the ultra-wealthy, and did severe damage to our country. He was one of the weakest, most corrupt, and most divisive occupants of the job. So it makes sense that historians rate him as the worst president we’ve ever had.
